Our priority "Driven" series on several cars I've tried the spring of 2009 IMPA braking event. These short summaries are taken from my driving impressions of cars on the roads around Bear Mountain State Park in Rockland County, New York.

Before the spring brake, I knew this car would be there, but I doubt I would get a turn behind the wheel. With so many other cars available, I did not waste much time standing in line for a car. Before the trip began, I could take some pictures of the SLR. As the morning progressed, I could hear the bellowing of reflex with V-8 as drivers accelerated hard to leave a sharp left turn after entering the park. The car was still on the road. Always wait.
Shortly after noon, I went to the large amount of driving an Infiniti G37S Convertible. It was lunchtime, and everyone took a break to eat. I grabbed a hot dog, and realized the SLR was sitting alone with nobody around. Mercedes-Benz had a half dozen young public relations staff on hand to help and answer questions. They also went to take a break. However, I saw my opportunity to be the first to get the SLR.
I just went to the car and hung around her. SLR is quite shocking to find a Mercedes, but cool and sophisticated compared to the hyper-competitive against Italian exotics. The interior, as you can see below, reflect this design philosophy.

The main theme is that SLR McLaren is a very useful tool to drive very serious. The interior, lined with leather and carbon fiber, is designed to help you and not distracting you from driving the car. But the heart of any car of this caliber is in the engine room.

The SLR Roadster uses the same powertrain as the coupe which preceded it, a supercharged 5.4L hand, all-aluminum V-8 617hp coupled to an estimated 5-speed automatic. Although AMG builds the engine, without plaque seen everywhere. Car and Driver tested a time from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, with a 1 / 4 mile in 11.6 seconds to reach 125 mph. The Roadster has a top speed of 207 mph.
Since only about 100 Roadsters SLR sold in the United States in 2008 with a list price of $ 497 750 Mercedes-Benz needs of its employees to enter the car with you, and not to blame. I was approached by Nicole Weiss, who asked me if I was interested in a player. I said I was ready.
By pressing a button on the door raises GullWing style door (in accordance with the SLR coupe). You need to stretch your legs are just to get in, but given the broad level, the entry / exit easy. The leather seats, carbon fiber formed is quite firm and I was a little disappointed about the limited number of seat adjustments I could make for an ideal driving position. I think McLaren's decision to move the engine back on the front axle for optimal weight distribution is the main culprit here. Otherwise, sitting in the SLR is like sitting in any Mercedes price.
Nicole gave me the key, I get to start over. I hear a buzz, but nothing happens. I look around for a start button, but not seen. Another person approached Mo, sees the problem and conjecture "You have broken." I can not believe. It is close to an F1 car driver David Coulthard, ACE has helped to develop, and will not start. Finally someone comes up and says the start button is hidden under a small cover on the top of the shifter. The SLR McLaren shoots him, but quickly settled into a quiet waiting.
Nicole told me a transsexual three different options to choose from, but I will leave it unchanged. Although I am familiar with the roads, I'll run it on the SLR, I'm not used to having 617hp on tap. Or run a half-million dollars per car. On tight, twisting roads around Bear Mountain, it is immediately obvious that I'm not far from exploiting the potential of the SLR. I'm not even scratch the surface of its capabilities, but powering out of corners, I can almost feel the electronic nannies to keep everything under control. The SLR also has carbon ceramic brakes, I'm told they work great when hot-SLR never had any problems with the stop but the brakes cold have been difficult to adjust, so I was unable to stop as well as I would have liked.
While all this happens, I'll have a pleasant conversation with Nicole. The SLR McLaren began production in 2003 and is now at the end of its travel. In this spirit, I say that Nicole is a unique opportunity that is driving this car. He explained that the SLR is the development of Mo products, and no Mercedes SLR in the press fleet. He also mentioned another Gullwing supercar in the works, but quickly points the project internally. I do not speak my conscience of the tense relationship between Mercedes and McLaren. I'm too busy enjoying my drive in this supercar.
A few kilometers of local roads, we have a brief burst Palisades Parkway, the old road, and very narrow. It 's my only option in terms of SLR, and I, but very briefly, it is so strong, so fast, you know the time of the car, once again overmatched times the road. Shortly after the race was coming to an end.
As I have argued the SLR McLaren back in place, was my chief impression. This is a fantastic car, the epitome of the Mercedes-Benz and McLaren Engineering. But where I was, was too much for a car. The power, grip, and the limits of technology so high, has exceeded my ability and I was driving a car.
It is difficult to say how history will judge the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, but my record will stand as a memorable one, and it was a pleasure to share my records with the readers of the GA
